Why choose us?
At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Oatley, we provide our students with a place to grow. The village environment encourages students to inquire, engage and achieve in their learning. Our teaching staff is experienced and know our students well – this involvement drives strong, well-rounded education outcomes.
We foster involvement between parents, staff, students and the parish, and believe this connectedness ensures that the interest and passions of the whole child are realised and nurtured.
Principal’s Message
Thank you for choosing to find out more about St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Oatley.
We acknowledge and pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this land, the Dharug people. Who long before us lived, loved and raised their children on this land. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
We also acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in our country and recognise their deep spiritual connections to land, water and community.
As principal of this wonderful school, I am guided and inspired by the words of St Mary Mackillop, ‘we must teach more by example than by word’.
I am passionate about building a community, where our students, staff, parish and families work together to make our school the very best it can be.
There are many great qualities that make St Joseph’s a unique school: the warmth of the community, the dedicated and caring teachers, the variety of authentic opportunities provided and the way we learn.
We are a welcoming community that fosters relationships within our school and parish.
This partnership sustains a culture that enables the whole child to be nurtured to grow in faith and knowledge and live in peace.
We are committed to Catholic education, taking pride in our professionalism and collegiality. Our principles of learning reflect our belief that students learn best when they engage and inquire in order to achieve. Our school, situated in the village of Oatley, provides students with ‘A time to learn, a place to grow’. My staff and I look forward to watching your child grow at St Joseph’s.
Ms Kylie Brakel
Principal
History
St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Oatley was established in 1955. The first teachers were the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and they taught in the school from 1955 to 1979.
As a community, we are inspired and guided by the spiritual gifts of St Joseph, St Mary of the Cross and Our Lady Help of Christians.
Charism
As guardian of the Redeemer and protector of the Church, St Joseph serves as a model of humility, dedicated to the service of one’s family, silently doing the ordinary in an extraordinary way.
The Sisters of St Joseph’s way of loving and living encourages us to live with simplicity, hospitality, and generosity.
We take up the call of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop, to never see a need without doing something about it.
Under the protection of Mary Help of Christians, patroness of Australia, may the light of Christ shine over our land, and may we as Australians be granted harmony, justice and peace.
Mission
Our mission at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Oatley is to educate our children within the framework of an authentic Catholic community. Jesus Christ is the central person in our school and we are called to oneness in Him.
Within the context of Gospel values and with special consideration of the Church teachings on social justice issues, we are committed to nurturing the individual development of each child. We recognise and strive to foster the intellectual, social, physical, spiritual and emotional dimensions of each child’s life.
Vision
We are called to be members of a community of God’s People, journeying together and sharing the Christian life. We strive to be people who are:
- Loving
- Hopeful
- Peaceful
- Prophetic
- Forgiving
- Nurturing

St Joseph’s Catholic Parish Church conveniently sits right next door to our school, on the corner of Frederick and Rosa Streets in Oatley. Our school and the parish work together to ensure our students grow in faith, knowledge, and peace.
Parish Priest, Fr Paul, frequently visits our school and enjoys a weekly morning tea with the staff as together, they build on the trust and fellowship that binds the parish and the staff. He visits students in their classroom once a term to make connections and to talk to them about our faith. In addition to these informal gatherings, a class joins the parish community to celebrate Mass at 12.00pm each term, on a Thursday. These Masses are a cherished gathering of our school and parish community.
Everyone is welcome to join our parish family, so if you are new please make yourself known to Fr Paul.
