Our teachers know their students and work with them to help them realise their potential as learners. Our focus on authentic learning and authentic assessment ensures that we challenge our students to grow in their learning and achieve their personal best.
Throughout our community of Sydney Catholic schools, we have shown high performance of our students in measures such as NAPLAN and the HSC.
At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Oatley positive learning environments are created to generate successful learners, who embrace challenge, apply effort, persevere and achieve. This growth mindset is valued as essential for accomplishment in knowledge and ability as students grow and change over time.
We believe that we achieve:
- when we believe in our own personal capabilities
- when learners have a growth mindset where effort, challenge and perseverance are valued
- when a sense of success enables new pathways for all learners
- when learners have regular opportunities for choice in their own learning.
In 2019, ACARA identified our school as having demonstrated substantially above average gain in reading achievement, as measured by NAPLAN.
Our community is particularly proud of one of our former Year 6 leaders, who have received The Banks Leadership Scholarship in recent years. This is an award from David Coleman and is offered to students in the Banks electorate who display a strong combination of academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement.
Our students pursue and celebrate many outstanding achievements in the Creative Arts.
CASPA Student Ensembles
This is a great opportunity to extend the performance skills of talented students who will work with a range of industry professionals as well as expert tutors and teachers from schools in the various art forms. The program is tailored for students from Years 5 and up. Currently we have two students involved in these ensembles; one for drama and the other for music (singing).

Sydney Eisteddfod
St Joseph’s Oatley Dance Show Group has performed in the Sydney Eisteddfod at the Sydney Opera House. Currently there are two Dance troupes.
Threatened Species Art Competition
Many of our Stage 3 students enter the Threatened Species Art Competition each year. The Threatened Species Facebook page has highlighted some of our students’ artwork.
Sporting Achievement
Annually many of our students participate in the NSW Catholic Primary Schools Netball Carnival and the Eastern Region Soccer Gala Day. Our students represent strongly at St George Cluster for cross country, athletics and swimming. Many of our students go on to represent at the Eastern Region Cluster.
MacKillop is the next level of representation. This level draws students from Canberra/Goulburn, Sydney, Parramatta, Wagga Wagga and Wollongong. Individual achievements from St Joseph’s students have been rewarded by making the MacKillop team for Swimming, Tennis, Hockey and Soccer.
